Welcome to Republic City!

It was a bright and sunny normal day in Republic City. Children were playing, spirits were chirping about, and everything was going along like normal. Well at least that's what everyone seemed to think. That is until so many people seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. For some reason Republic City seemed to be more lively and the crowds bigger.

The spirits have grown restless as if something important was about to change, and to try to fix that change, the spirits with their big long tree like limbs dragged people into the world left and right. Even the vines covering Republic City seemed to help. Although the spirits had the best intentions in mind, some people were more affected by the grab than others. There's talk that people in this city don't even know what this place is. People who have never heard of the words "bender" or "non-bender."

Welcome to Republic City! And to those who already live here: Happy Saturday. Please make yourselves at home and don't mind a little spirit gunk. It's mostly harmless. Go enjoy yourself a classic mover. Maybe you're the athletic type. If that's the case, come watch a few Pro-bending matches or form your own team. Just watch out for any Satomobiles. They can be deadly no matter how pretty the driver is.

Please remember to enjoy your stay and don't cause too much trouble. The Republic City Police don't need more riffraff to take care of. And don't stray too far. To make the the peace is kept, there's a huge spirit barrier around the perimeter of the city. It seems pretty strong, but it won't be able to last forever. Still, it's worrying. Radio signals and telegraphs don't seem to be getting past it.

The Poorest Outskirts of Dragon Flats Borough, Around Mid- to Late-Afternoon

[Being good on his word, Wan had indeed taken the extra care packages Asami had let him get away with taking to where he knew some of the homeless people of the city gathered for warmth and what camaraderie they could get. He was not giving the packages out the way Future Industries had, instead he had opened them up and separated their parts into piles (blankets, maps, money, etc) and was handing out the individual things people needed. Most of the maps were going into fires to burn and blankets were being exchanged for dirty ones so Wan could wash them and bring them back.

The money was not actually being handed out. Wan had other plans for it: buying medicine and food.

If he happens to notice anyone that looks homeless that isn't part of the group he'd half-adopted for the day, he smiles warmly at them and greets them with a kind:]

Do you need any medicine? I'm buying that first and if you need anything, I'll add it to the list.

I'm tempted. [It wasn't as if most places were off limits but Nabooru happened to feel a little poorly about being in the slums and actually thinking about taking things she didn't need. Less unfortunate and all that. Not everyone was accustomed to the life she lived. Thieving.

But she had wanted to check it out to at least see what kind of poor souls were gathering.] But I'm sure there are people who need it more than me or my girls. [But it was somewhat nice to see him again.]

[Wan's smile broadened. He hadn't been sure when he approached Nabooru if she actually would need anything, but she was in the area and she was as much a vagabond as anyone else in the area, so he was willing. But it was gratifying to know she and her girls were fine.]

That's good to hear. I don't have a lot of money, just what I could pool from the packages Future Industries was giving out. But medicine is harder to seal than food.

More profitable, so it's closer guarded. [As if she didn't know how things worked in the big city by now. It was hardly the tight knit caring group she was used to.]

You're very nice, looking out for everyone. [Nabooru herself was less nice. Clearly.]

I'm just doing what I can.

[Wan said with a shrug, downplaying the kindness. He thought it was something everyone should try to do for others if they could.]

Do you have some time to help me? Or are you just passing through?

Help? [Nabooru didn't think of herself as the super helpful type. But then again. There were homeless women and children. And it's not like she had something else to do on her schedule. But it was better to check first.]

What kind of help?

[Wan gave a quick glance around before waving her away from the group so they could talk in relative privacy.]

Well, like I was saying, I can't really get the medicine these people need without buying it. But that means I also can't afford much food for them. And I know you don't care about the rules the city has about stealing... so I was just thinking that when I go to get the medicine, you could come with me and we could find a warehouse to liberate some basic foods from for them, too. Hard bread rolls, fruits, things that will keep for a few days.

[Stealing to help other people survive? It wasn't like she had to think too hard about something like that.]

Piece of cake. [Said with a very confident flare.] Sounds like fun. You can certainly count on me.

Great!

[Wan grinned brightly.]

Give me a minute to talk to Mula and let these people know I'll be back in an hour or two.

[He moved off to do just that, leaving Nabooru alone for the moment. Any preparations she needed to make would have to be done right there.]

[She just gave him a firm nod and let him walk away. After that she turned away from him and flexed her hands before dropping to do a few stretches. She was sure things would go off without a hitch but if she needed to find her way out a window or across a rooftop it was better to be safe than sorry. Especially since they were going out in daytime. All of her jobs had been pulled in daytime a while ago, so she was used to it. But there were more eyes in the city. She hadn't been in the middle of anything else, so leaving without notice wasn't going to be a huge problem for her.]

[Wan came back a few minutes later, a tattered red scarf that could double as a hood now wrapped around his neck. It was long and roomy and he planned on putting food into it, but for the moment it served to cover his face from easy view if he decided to pull it up.]

The nearest warehouse district is north of us, near the bridge. I think I've seen a Cabbage Corp building among them. They still do food, right?

[Wan was, of course, talking while he was walking.]

[She followed his lead, cracking the knuckles on both her hands as he spoke.]

With a name like "cabbage" in the title, I'd sure hope so.

Me, too. But I know they make some of those airships, too, so I really hope the warehouse has food and not ship parts.

[Because that would be really disappointing.

After a few more minutes of walking, once they were out of sight of the neighborhood and in an alley, Wan turned to Nabooru and held out his hand.]

So I'm thinking it'll be faster if we fly.

[ After wandering around the city for a while, Jin needed to rest for a moment. She was about to sit down when she noticed some guy seemed to be helping out a lot of people. That was really sweet. She couldn't help but smile and quietly wander up to the group. ]

Don't worry I'm fine.

[Jin looked like she was part of the group, though perhaps a little cleaner than most of them. Wan nodded at her assurance, but gestured back at the pile of blankets.]

Do you need a blanket? Do you sleep around here?

[He is totally assuming she's homeless.]

Actually this is kind of my first time [ What exactly was she doing here? ] visiting this city?

[Wan raised an eyebrow, becoming slightly concerned.]

Do you have a place to stay? Are you here with family or friends?

I don't really have a place to stay

[ She paused and then laughed and tried to wave it off. ]

But I'm sure I'll make do!

I'm sure the people here wouldn't mind sharing their fire with you. But, if you want a roof, there are plenty of abandoned buildings in the Spirit Wilds. I'm camping in one of them right now. It's cozy.

I'll think about it, but I think I want to continue exploring a little more. Besides I'd feel bad taking any sort of rations or boarding that I didn't need, even if there was a lot of room.

The buildings in the Spirit Wilds are abandoned. No one else is using them, so why not you?

[Which was exactly why Wan was holing up there.]

But if you don't need any food right now, that'll help the others. My name is Wan. It's nice to meet you.

Alright, I'll think about it then.

[ He was really hard to say no to because he seemed so sweet. ]

It's nice to meet you, Wan. My name's Jin.

Jin. Got it.

[He straightened and put a hand on his hip.]

If you're not busy, would you mind helping me go buy the medicine these people need? I don't know if I'll need the help carrying any of it, but it's better to take someone along just in case. And you look like you can handle that.

I would love to help you!

[ She smiles at him brightly. ]

I mean a little kindness goes a looooong way, right? So if we both help then everyone here will feel even more warm. That's the way I see it at least.

[She was a girl after Wan's own heart.]

It sure does. Give me a minute, and I'll be right back.

[Wan jogged off to say something to the catdeer that was standing a little ways off and give her a quick ear-scratch and then waved to the group of homeless people as he called out that he would be right back.

When he re-joined Jin, he pointed down the street.]

They told me earlier that the nearest medicine-seller, something called a pharmacy, is this way.
