Welcome to Republic City!

It was a bright and sunny normal day in Republic City. Children were playing, spirits were chirping about, and everything was going along like normal. Well at least that's what everyone seemed to think. That is until so many people seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. For some reason Republic City seemed to be more lively and the crowds bigger.

The spirits have grown restless as if something important was about to change, and to try to fix that change, the spirits with their big long tree like limbs dragged people into the world left and right. Even the vines covering Republic City seemed to help. Although the spirits had the best intentions in mind, some people were more affected by the grab than others. There's talk that people in this city don't even know what this place is. People who have never heard of the words "bender" or "non-bender."

Welcome to Republic City! And to those who already live here: Happy Saturday. Please make yourselves at home and don't mind a little spirit gunk. It's mostly harmless. Go enjoy yourself a classic mover. Maybe you're the athletic type. If that's the case, come watch a few Pro-bending matches or form your own team. Just watch out for any Satomobiles. They can be deadly no matter how pretty the driver is.

Please remember to enjoy your stay and don't cause too much trouble. The Republic City Police don't need more riffraff to take care of. And don't stray too far. To make the the peace is kept, there's a huge spirit barrier around the perimeter of the city. It seems pretty strong, but it won't be able to last forever. Still, it's worrying. Radio signals and telegraphs don't seem to be getting past it.

[So he's all ready with a pen, ready to sign something, yet Jin's comment takes him slightly off guard.]

Wait whaaaat? You waited in the entire line without knowing who you were going to meet?

Well allow me to introduce you to Nuktuk, the main character of the award-winning moving picture The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South!

[He looks to the person in line behind her.]

Hey, let me borrow that poster for a moment. [He takes it and unscrolls it to reveal the picture used to advertise the film.]

[ The whole time he was describing what this line was for, she looked completely lost. What was a moving picture? How did pictures move? It sounded like he was talking about some sort of story from a book though. She was dragged out of her thoughts when he showed her the poster. ]

That's amazing! Someone painted this for you? It looks so life like!

[Sadly, it won't even occur to Bolin that Jin doesn't know about moving pictures. Didn't everyone?]

Painted? Naw, this is a photograph from the show we did. Probably most of the people in line have 'em. I can't imagine having someone paint a thousand copies of that.

[ She tilted her head to the side and gave him another curious look. ]

Photo... graph?

[Okay, that's not the reaction that Bolin was expecting.]

You don't know what a photograph is? Man, you must have been living in some far off corner of the Earth Kingdom to have not heard them. They're one of the latest things!

Someone has this little box thing with a light on top. You stand there in a pose in front of the box, and the light flashes, and then a few days later, they can print what the box thing saw and put it on paper!

[Depending upon your point of view, Bolin is either the best person to ask about technology... or the worst.]

[ Do you see this look on her face, Bolin? It's a look of complete amazement. She couldn't believe something like that could actually exist. It almost sounded like magic. ]

That's... amazing! And it just works like that? Bam a magic painting without the work?

[This is the look of someone who completely does not know that she's from the past. Technology is so amazing and wonderful; he's not surprised by that at all.]

More or less! Well, apparently it takes a few hours to actually make the... "magic painting," [he says a little carefully, perhaps suggesting that, okay, maybe he is a little surprised by the way she talks about it,] and only the journalists and the wealthy really have them. I couldn't afford one, even after the money I made off of Nuktuk.

[He really should have negotiated a better contract.]

Oh, well maybe that's why it's so unfamiliar to me. That would make sense. I can't imagine something so amazing like that being sold down in the lower ring...

[ She strokes her chin for a second. ]

Well anyway, congratulations for being in famous portraits!

Thanks...

[Wait... wait wait wait wait.]

You're from the lower ring of Ba Sing Se, too? So am I! Well, not technically; my parents were from here, but the rest of my family is from there!

[Well, it's pretty clear at this point that Bolin is just jammering on with one of the ~~fans~~ people who have stood in line, and so that's going to cause a little bit of a resentment from people behind. One of the workers taps Bolin and tries to nudge his attention that direction... which unfortunately works.]

Sorry... and [now to Jin] sorry to you too. Are you staying in the city now? [He's got a brief bit of time more before he'll have to give his attention elsewhere.]

[ She giggles a little from the way poor Bolin was practically flailing about. he seemed like a really sweet boy. ]

You don't have to apologize to me for anything [ She paused for a moment. ]

And I guess I kind of am now.

[Well, it's not like he's single at the moment. He is kind of seeing Opal. But she seems a nice girl... and more than a little lost. And she's from back home; that's easily enough for Bolin to at least want to get to know her better.]

Well I don't know if I'll get the chance to see you in the city again. It's... kinda big and all. But here... [Bolin takes out a piece of paper and scribbles an address down on it.] If you ever are looking for someone to show you around the city, I'd be happy to do so. And it would be good to hear about things are back in Ba Sing Se. Especially after all the things that have just happened, you know, in the Earth Kingdom.

[Yeah, he has no idea that she's not from around this time.]

I know it's terrible! I don't I was ever even told how those Fire Nation people somehow snuck in!

[ Oh wait, you mean you weren't talking about when Azula and her gals took over Ba Sing Se, Bolin? ]

[Finally, Bolin is going to notice that something is amiss. And it's certainly not the first thing to be amiss today.]

Fire Nation? [Cue a very confused look from Bolin. What did the Fire Nation have to do with anything about the Earth Kingdom?] What about the Fire Nation? Are they actually trying to come in to help restore order to the Earth Kingdom after the Earth Queen was assassinated?

Earth Queen?

[ She gave him a weird look and then started to laugh. ]

That's hilarious, Bolin was it? Everyone knows Earth King Kuei is the one in charge.

[That's supposed to be a joke, isn't it? He can't help but laugh along with her.]

Oh that's a good one, really funny! But... no, King Kuei hasn't been ruling the country for some time now. It's now Queen Hou-Ting, and she is not a nice lady. [And then in something of a whisper, he adds:] But I kind of wish he was; he can't have been any worse!

[ She leaned in to whisper right back to him. ]

I have no idea what you're talking about. There has never been a Queen Hou-ting. It's Earth King Kuei, silly.

Nope, that's totally not true. Mako and I met the Earth Queen about, what, five weeks ago? And that was before she was assassinated, and the entire Earth Kingdom went spiraling into chaos!

So now there's no Earth King or Earth Queen.

You can keep saying that all you want but I know for a fact the ruler is King Kuei.

Is not. I mean, when was the last time you were even in the Earth Kingdom? Next thing you're going to tell me that the Avatar is Aang or something.

Um, before I came here I had never left Ba Sing Se, so I think I know a little bit about it, Mister smarty pants. And he is the Avatar though. I thought everyone knew that.

[Well, she seemed to know what she was talking about. But at the same time, it just flew in the face of all the facts.]

You... er, have seen the big statue of Aang out in Yue Bay, right? [His voice is a little quiet.] He's the one that founded the United Republic sixty years ago after the Harmony Restoration Movement was called off.

Sixty years ago...?

[ That can't really be... did she really appear in the future from her time? Not wanting to cause more concern for Bolin she gave him an awkward laugh and a smile. ]

You're right! I think I must be still half asleep or something. Seriously where did I get that stuff from.

[Well, at least she's not confused about things any more, though she really did have to be living under a rock or have been reading some of the stranger tabloids to have believed those things. Well, whatever; Bolin's not going to hold it over your head.]

It's okay, don't worry about it. Earth King, Earth Queen, they're not here, and we don't have to worry about that here in Republic City!

[Optimism, right?]
