Welcome to Republic City!

It was a bright and sunny normal day in Republic City. Children were playing, spirits were chirping about, and everything was going along like normal. Well at least that's what everyone seemed to think. That is until so many people seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. For some reason Republic City seemed to be more lively and the crowds bigger.

The spirits have grown restless as if something important was about to change, and to try to fix that change, the spirits with their big long tree like limbs dragged people into the world left and right. Even the vines covering Republic City seemed to help. Although the spirits had the best intentions in mind, some people were more affected by the grab than others. There's talk that people in this city don't even know what this place is. People who have never heard of the words "bender" or "non-bender."

Welcome to Republic City! And to those who already live here: Happy Saturday. Please make yourselves at home and don't mind a little spirit gunk. It's mostly harmless. Go enjoy yourself a classic mover. Maybe you're the athletic type. If that's the case, come watch a few Pro-bending matches or form your own team. Just watch out for any Satomobiles. They can be deadly no matter how pretty the driver is.

Please remember to enjoy your stay and don't cause too much trouble. The Republic City Police don't need more riffraff to take care of. And don't stray too far. To make the the peace is kept, there's a huge spirit barrier around the perimeter of the city. It seems pretty strong, but it won't be able to last forever. Still, it's worrying. Radio signals and telegraphs don't seem to be getting past it.

[ For years it had been Yang's dream to join a pro-bending team and her move to Republic City only brought her one step closer to achieving it. In actuality, Yang was supposed to be looking for week, but that didn't mean stopping by the arena was out of the question. She wasn't really expecting to find a scout, she just wanted to see the arena up close in personal.

Letting her imagination get away with her, she imagined what it would be like to step out of the arena with fans cheering her name, having just one the championship. She'd wave to the crowd and offer anyone that looked her way a smile.

Almost as if her prayers had been answered, the words Fire Ferrets and championship hit her ear. Yang immediately perked up and looking in the direction . This was her chance...! ]

Hey, did I hear you right? The Fire Ferrets are recruiting?

[Bolin's ears definitely perk when he hears someone mention the Fire Ferrets within any reasonable distance.]

Heeey, you certainly heard that right!

[Here, have a flier.]

We're looking for... or rather, I'm looking for two members to fill out the team. Since I'm the only person on the team so far. My waterbender and firebender bailed after last year.

[With good reason, too. They really weren't all that good.]

[ How lucky could Yang get? Already in Republic City five days and discovered the Fire Ferrets are recruiting. ]

Wait-- You're Bolin then? [ Her face completely lit up with excitement. ] I'm a huge fan. I haven't gotten to a match in action yet, but listened to it on the radio was amazing. I never missed a match! It's too bad about missing the championship last year though, I really thought you guys had it in the bag.

[ She graciously took a flyer, giving it a quick look over. ] You can count on seeing me there, I'm a firebender and there's no way I'm going to miss a chance to try out for The Ferrets!

Ayup, that's me! In the flesh! [Bolin is totally going to share in that excitement, and he's totally not modest at all about it.] It's always good to meet a good fan of ours, especially these days. [Last year had tarnished the name a bit, admittedly.]

And... yeah, last year was a... "rebuilding year." It's hard when you lose two of your teammates and have to struggle to find replacements at the last minute.

Buuuut, that said I'm looking forward to seeing you at the tryouts! By the way, I didn't quite catch your name...

I'm seriously looking forwarding to seeing the team in action this year. [ Preferably from the ring rather than the sidelines. ] I have a good feeling you're going to do well this year. [ Because you didn't have me on the team before. The last bit goes unsaid, but it's defiantly implied. ]

hat's because I didn't give it. I'm Yang! Yang Xiao Long.

[~~Finally, a new person with a completely sensible name.~~]

Oh I know, me too. I'm hoping that this is a comeback year for the Fire Ferrets and that we can show them what we're made of. [Of course, Bolin is talking about the metaphorical "we" of himself and whoever ends up on the team, but he doesn't catch that it could easily be interpreted as Yang being in on that!] So before you go, where are you from, Yang? I've never seen you on any of the other teams, so are you new to the city? Or did you just not make a team last year?

If I don't make it on the team? Consider me your number one fan. There's not a chance I'm missing a game!

[ She has enough sense to take it as it means it, but it doesn't mean a girl can't dream a little. ] Oh, yeah. I'm pretty new, as like... pretty fresh off the boat new.

[ At least a few days in she was already making some headway on the job front. And at least one step closer to fulfilling her dream. ] I'd say Pro-Bending is why I moved, but I'd be lying. I planned on moving eventually,-- little island life really isn't my thing. [ She gives a half-hearted shrug. ] But she's an air bender now and I'm such a great big sister that we both decided coming here was best for both of us.

[ Yes, that makes her the chaperone. She gets to handle the working, the money, paying rent... But when it comes down to it, she doesn't mind. She would do almost anything for her little sister. ]

[Well at least she's super optimistic about the Fire Ferrets. He really does like that, and it takes all of Bolin's mental mustering to keep from signing her up for the Fire Ferrets on the spot. What can he say; Bolin likes his ego scratched a bit.]

Your sister's an airbender? That's amazing! She got her bending after the Harmonic Convergence, right? I'm practically friends with all the airbenders since I know Tenzin and his entire family. To be honest, I'm kind of dating an airbender right now. But that's awesome that you moved to be with your sister. I'll definitely be rooting for you at the tryouts and hope that you do well!

[Really, Bolin, you're supposed to be neutral and objective on this one.]

Yeah, it was a pretty big shock. We tried to help her, but both me and dad are firebenders. We don't know the first thing there is to know about airbending.

[ Yang doesn't show it on her face, but she's impressed. ] Wow, really? So you're a bender, a big shot mover star and you know Tenzin and you're dating an airbender. You sound like a busy guy!

[ She laughs. ] My sister is actually out looking for the other airbenders now, but... She's not the best with directions. Or people.

Well, you know... I've just happened to fall in with the right people and find my niche in the world. It's about having 20% great luck... and about 80% natural talent. Ayup. I'm still kind of surprised I've managed all that in the past few years!

But yeah, airbending, my gosh, it is... quite unlike anything I know about bending. All of those circles and being light on your feet? It's practically the opposite of everything I know about earthbending. I wouldn't know where to start either. That's why it's so good Tenzin's able to teach all of them.

But if she's looking for the airbenders, they're all going to be out at Air Temple Island. I would hope she can find Yue Bay; it's kind of hard to miss, really!

[ Yang chuckles. ] I would hope she can too, but we'll see how she does. I'm sure she's bound to find someone that can push her in the right direction.

[ While Yang knew her sister wasn't the best on her feet or with people, she had a lot of faith in her even if she did worry from time to time. It was her duty as big sister to watch out for her, but she also felt it was equally necessary to let her strike out on her own. ]

It's cool, but hardly my style. I prefer to punch my way through things. [ She might have been a firebender, but she was a huge fan of earthbending stances and liked to adapt them into her fighting style. ] At least she's not the only one-- Starting fresh, I mean. I can't imagine what it's actually like to be a non-bender your whole love and just like that it's all changed.

[All things considered, Bolin certainly is becoming a fan of Yang. Granted, while he's dating Opal and not looking for a relationship, he can't help but admit that they have a connection.]

You and I have so much in common! Important airbenders in our lives, we like to punch things, we both want to be pro-benders. It's really awesome.

[If Bolin is truly honest with himself, which he's not exactly, he would be admonishing himself for thinking the thought of signing her up for the time not even knowing how good of a bender she was. But he successfully resists the temptation and swallows the thought.]

But yeah, I know what you mean. Actually I kind of know what you mean personally; I recently discovered that I had a rare type of bending myself just a little while ago. It's weird to consider to think that that's been inside myself the whole time.

[ Yang feels the same way, she's not really the kind to be interested in romance and she was already a fan of Bolin in the Probending sense. And while she had seen him in the movers, it clearly didn't compare to the real guy. He was cool and though she had just met him she truly did hope that even if she didn't get the spot on the team that she could at least consider him a friend. ]

I know, right? I mean, how often do you just kind of bump into someone like that. [ She laughs. ]

Woah, really? I've heard stories about rare types of bending, but I always thought they were just that-- stories. [ She gives him a look, sizing him up. ] You know you're going to have to show me now, right?

In Republic City? With all the people here? Believe me, I've tried to meet people here with the same interests, and there are just too many different ones.

[Though technically, Bolin's positivity certainly would "find" more similarities than meets the eye, really.

[However, her enthusiasm to see his lavabending does give him a bit of a pause.]

Weeeeeeell, it's a bending type that... I don't think would be all that easy to show in the city. Where there are people... and buildings... that would probably get damaged in the process. I mean, lavabending isn't exactly something you just want to throw around without being careful about it.......

At least that's a benefit of the city too, but it is nice to find someone that knows where you're coming from.

[ ... ]

Okay, I see your point. But I would like to see it sometime, y'know, just in a place where others wouldn't have to get hurt. [ It's not that she doesn't believe him, because if Yang was right about him he was an honest guy. Just how many times in her lifetime would she even get a chance to see a rare bending type like his? ]

Well, yeah. I guess I could show it off one of these days. Maybe outside the city. When we've got a little time. There's some spots on the outskirts that I don't think are covered by all the spirit vines. It is kind of cool, even if I've only really used it when my life has been on the line.

[Bolin feels a little more comfortable now that they're talking about it more in the abstract.]

But anyway, I'm going to see you at the tryouts, right?

Great, I'll be looking forward to it then! It's okay, I won't mind if you can't actually do it-- Or, if you prefer I could help out a bit. You know, with the whole "life in the line thing".

[ She smirks, not hundred percent serious. Unless he actually asked her to, she would never put someone as friendly as Bolin in danger. ]

Yeah, you bet! There's no way I'm passing up an opportunity like this.

Well, it's not like I need my life threatened to lavabend! It's just... I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. It's not exactly your normal earthbending moves.

[Seriously, would you want to be standing next to a volcano? That's even weird for Bolin.]

Sounds fantastic then. I guess I'll see you in a few days?

[ Don't ask her that, the answer may surprise you. Yang is... somewhat of a dare devil, reckless situations excite her. She's the kind of gal that would jump out of an airship without a parachute and think it was fun. ]

You really are a nice guy, huh? At least such responsibility it put in the hands of a responsible kinda guy! [ She really did like Bolin more and more every second. ]

Yeah, I'll be looking forward to showing you what I'm mad of. [ She winks, half turning to walk away. ] Even if I do get the spot, I still need a job and standing around here isn't going to do me a lot of good. It great meeting you, Bolin.

[Tell Bolin that leaping out of an aircraft without a parachute is fun after she pancakes into the ground, and then Bolin might believe it.

[Though calling Bolin "responsible"? Well, at least his heart is in the right place, even if he is very pliable.] Well, yeah, that's me, Mr. Responsibility. I see things through all the way, all the time. [Even the bad things. Until he realizes they're bad.]

It's good meeting you too, Yang. Good luck on that; I can't wait to see what you're made of!
