Welcome to Republic City!

It was a bright and sunny normal day in Republic City. Children were playing, spirits were chirping about, and everything was going along like normal. Well at least that's what everyone seemed to think. That is until so many people seemed to be appearing out of nowhere. For some reason Republic City seemed to be more lively and the crowds bigger.

The spirits have grown restless as if something important was about to change, and to try to fix that change, the spirits with their big long tree like limbs dragged people into the world left and right. Even the vines covering Republic City seemed to help. Although the spirits had the best intentions in mind, some people were more affected by the grab than others. There's talk that people in this city don't even know what this place is. People who have never heard of the words "bender" or "non-bender."

Welcome to Republic City! And to those who already live here: Happy Saturday. Please make yourselves at home and don't mind a little spirit gunk. It's mostly harmless. Go enjoy yourself a classic mover. Maybe you're the athletic type. If that's the case, come watch a few Pro-bending matches or form your own team. Just watch out for any Satomobiles. They can be deadly no matter how pretty the driver is.

Please remember to enjoy your stay and don't cause too much trouble. The Republic City Police don't need more riffraff to take care of. And don't stray too far. To make the the peace is kept, there's a huge spirit barrier around the perimeter of the city. It seems pretty strong, but it won't be able to last forever. Still, it's worrying. Radio signals and telegraphs don't seem to be getting past it.

[ OOC: The game is officially open! From this point on, feel free to make any posts you want or tag into this. Please remember to tag your posts with Canon: Character. Finally, although the game has no real network, you're free to respond with prose or brackets, whatever you're comfortable with. With that said, have fun! ]

No kidding.

[The man who responds isn't beside her on the sidewalk, but instead stuck in a mid-sized Sato truck on the street and going nowhere because of the foot traffic. He drums his hand on the wheel, looking annoyed.]

I don't suppose there are any airbender tricks for getting people to move, are there miss?

[Opal glances in the direction of the voice, the Sato truck steadily purring away beside her. A somewhat mischievous little grin quirks her lips as she gives her shoulders a soft shrug.]

Not one that wouldn't make more than a few of them a little unhappy anyhow.

Yeah, same with earthbending.

[He slouches in his seat, watching people mill about. Even if they did have the common sense to get out of the street, there are so many of them right now that he's not sure they'd all fit on the sidewalks.]

Where are all these people coming from?

[personal profile] airyopalescent 2014-10-07 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think some of them are new airbenders... but it doesn't seem like this many of them should be, does it. There isn't a festival going on, is there?

Not that I know of. The equinox just passed.

[Giving up for the moment, Albert turns the key to cut his engine and gets out of the truck. He's not much worried about it going anywhere, not in this throng.]

A lot of them don't even seem to know what day it is, let alone where they are, and some say they're from placed I've never heard of, like 'New York', whatever that is.

[Opal laughs a little sheepishly, then her expression turns a little somber as she speaks.]

So you've run into those sorts too. ... What do you think about it? I've been trying to decide myself if they're serious or need more help. It doesn't seem right to leave them alone though...

I don't know. I feel bad for them, but it's causing some issues...

None of them seem to have real money which means they'll have to get jobs if they're here long, and the crowding is just going to get worse as the population increases and that barrier around the city doesn't budge. Economically speaking, it's going to put some people in dire straights, let alone these new ones who have nowhere to stay. Future Industries is doing what they can to offer aid, but it's a temporary solution.

[He runs a hand back through his hair, worried for a lot of reasons.]

What do you think?

[personal profile] airyopalescent 2014-10-07 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[The question is a hard one to answer. Opal looks away a moment, brow furrowed. Her voice is soft.]

I wish I had more of a solution. In the end though whatever it does to the city economically, people can't simply be abandoned. I've led a few of them to Air Temple Island to help since I'm not sure what's going on with the police... some of them are children.

I don't know what to do beyond that though.

Ultimately, it should be up to President and the council, but...

[No one's heard from them recently. That's also a worry.]

The kids at least should be taken care of, they're kids after all, so I agree with you there. Other than that, I don't know either.

[The teenager sighs out a bit before she gives the man a faint smile.]

It's definitely a difficult situation. I think for now though what you're doing is really the best - going on about your life. The newcomers, wherever they're from, will find their place eventually with some help.

Problem is, I'm not going about my life if they keep clogging the streets.

[He looks nonplussed, but a bit calmer about the whole thing, as if it's comforting that he's not the only one who doesn't have answers.]

You're right though, there's nothing for it but to help them for now. It's why I'm trying to get supplies up town. Blankets and things, for the newcomers.

Is that what's in the truck right now then?
